Walking the Aisle

by Kaye

On the day of my wedding, I was the happiest girl in the world. Everything was perfect. All on schedule. Not even a hair out of place.

Finally the time came. I stood in front of the doors of Santuario de San Antonio, trying to calm my nerves, fighting the urge to laugh out loud and cry at the same time while reminding myself that I do have the ability to walk.

Walk I did.

A quarter of the way down the aisle, an alarm sounded off in my head.

Halfway down, I stopped.

No, I wasn’t having second thoughts.

My petticoat had fallen down to my ankles!

It was so un-funny it was extremely funny!

But hell. I wasn’t going to let a fallen petticoat under my skirt steal my thunder.

So I walked down the rest of the aisle laughing my head off.

This has now become one of my favorite memories from that day.

Beauticians

by Marlon

When I was starting out as a makeup artist, a college friend asked me to do her makeup for her wedding. So with four other friends we hired a van and drove north of Manila. The wedding was to be held in their summer place. We left Manila around sunset for the five-hour drive. Because of the traffic, we got there by midnight. The provincial roads in that area are narrow and dark. On one of the curves, our headlights revealed a military check point. Now, the Philippines had a long history of military check points, specially during the Martial Law in the 70’s. It’s not that we don’t trust our men in uniform completely but when it’s midnight and you’re way out in the boondocks -- men with big guns who block the road are very scary. So we stopped in front of the checkpoint, our driver rolled down his window and greeted the men politely. The men had stoic faces and systematically surrounded our van. They opened doors and shone flashlights inside the van. Personally I was very scared. When, they got to the back of the van, they opened the back door and found one of our friends sleeping on top of make-up boxes and hair styling bags. They brusquely woke him up and asked, Ano ang nasa mga bag? (What’s inside the bags?) My friend who was surprised and who didn’t know what was happening piped in his sweet high-pitched voice, Make up?! The men looked at each other and started to laugh, A mga beautician! (Oh, beauticians!) They let us go.

Flowers

by Eric

1. My bestest girl friend, Jing, used to send me flowers on my birthday. It didn't matter where she was in the world, she'd never forget to ask someone from here to get flowers for me.

2. She'd also call me up every now and then. Most often it was to tell me some great news about her work and lovelife. Other times she just needed someone to talk to. Serendipitously those times I also needed someone to talk to.

3. The flowers stopped coming and the calls started coming less frequently around three years ago. That's when she met a Turkish guy named David in New York, where she'd been living the past five years.

4. Jing and David got married last Saturday here in Manila.

5. I was candle sponsor during the (non-Catholic) ceremony. It was short and sweet.

6. The reception program was fun. I emceed it.

7. Many sweet love songs were sung throughout the affair.

8. Our barkada went home right after dinner. I stayed behind because David, grateful for the "great" hosting job I did, would not let me go right away. I danced with Jing and her sisters.

9. At the end of the night, Jing got David, David got Jing, and I got a box of Authentic Turkish Delight (that's exactly what it says on the box).

10. I took a cab to go home. I put my iPod on and listened to "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". It was raining. And cold.

My Mother’s Veil

by Marlon

On the day of my parents’ wedding, my mother’s girlfriends convinced her to go to the beach one last time. The wedding was in the evening so there should be plenty of time for one quick all-girls’ outing. They had so much fun that they forgot about the time. My mother almost never made it on time for the wedding. After the wedding she discovered that in the rush she wore her wedding veil backwards.
